Ripple has received final regulatory approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish a national trust bank charter.
The creation of the national trust bank allows Ripple to operate under a federal banking charter across all 50 U.S. states. The new institution will primarily focus on two core functions: managing reserves for Ripple's dollar-pegged stablecoin (RLUSD) and providing enterprise-grade custody solutions for cryptocurrencies.
This approval represents a major structural shift for institutional crypto adoption. BNY (Bank of New York Mellon) announced immediate support for both XRP and RLUSD on its institutional custody platform, while simultaneously partnering with Ripple to explore tokenized trade finance on the XRP Ledger (XRPL).
Despite the historic regulatory win, the broader crypto market faced a challenging close to October 2026. Macroeconomic headwinds, including a hawkish Federal Reserve decision to hold interest rates between 3.75% and 4.00%, contributed to a "risk-off" sentiment across digital assets. While XRP experienced temporary downward price pressure alongside broader market liquidations, analysts note that the underlying institutional infrastructure for the asset has never been stronger.
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse addressed the community following the OCC announcement, reaffirming the company's dual strategy of expanding its stablecoin footprint while maintaining XRP as the core liquidity bridge for cross-border settlements. By securing a federal banking charter, Ripple joins a small tier of digital asset firms capable of bridging the gap between traditional banking infrastructure and public blockchain rails under direct federal oversight.
